The Power of Education: A Mission That Chose Us

We didn’t choose this project—it chose us.

It all began when Sheikh Abdul Alim Abdullah, the director of Majmʿ al-Imām an-Nawawī, visited us. At the time, we didn’t know who he was, but we honoured him as a guest. Through this encounter, we discovered the urgent educational needs in Syria.

Education Amidst Ruins

Majmʿ al-Imām an-Nawawī serves 7,000 students across 50 branches, offering a holistic education that integrates secular and Islamic sciences. Graduates go on to pursue university studies, whether in Islamic scholarship, medicine, or other fields.

Syria, after 62 years of ruthless oppression under a sectarian regime that killed millions, is now emerging from darkness. The country is devastated—some parts bombed; others ransacked. Yet, despite the destruction, the optimism of the people is unmatched. There is no joy like the joy of freedom.

Education: The Key to Resistance

In the midst of this, we witnessed the vital role of educational institutions in rebuilding Syria’s future.

When you educate, you empower. Knowledge is the greatest form of resistance. They say,“The pen is mightier than the sword.” Indeed, oppressors thrive on ignorance, deceiving and manipulating the uninformed. An educated society, however, cannot be controlled. Passive resistance—knowing what to do—is the foundation of any meaningful struggle.

A person enlightened by knowledge and guided by the Quran and the way of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) becomes a beacon, illuminating even the darkest of times.

This mission was not sought—it was given to us by Allah (Most High). And at its heart lies one fundamental truth: Education. Education. Education.

“Can those who had been dead, to whom We gave life and a light with which they can walk among people, be compared to those in complete darkness from which they can never emerge?”

(Quran, 6:122)
